FAQ

Q: What is mold remediation?
A: The process of establishing a containment around the work area, demolishing infested walls, disinfecting remaining materials, and disposing of debris. HEPA air filtration removes mold spores from the air and should be included in mold remedial efforts.

Q: How much does mold remediation cost?
A: It depends. The size of the area and the number of people and machines to complete the job are significant factors. Labor, materials, overhead, and profit can price the most basic mold remediation at $2,000.

Q: What’s involved in doing mold remediation?
A: Travel to and from the job site. Dump run. Setup at the beginning and break down at the end. Demolition, disinfections, disposal, dehumidification (if wet conditions), and HEPA air filtration are the large categories that encompass mold remediation. Attention to detail, cleanliness, and timelines are also important factors.

Q: How long does mold remediation take to complete?
A: In general, it can take 3 to 4 days to set up, demo, disinfect, HEPA air filtration, and cleanup. Testing afterwards can add a couple more days, and reconstruction could add several more days. It is best to plan for at least a week’s worth of disruption for things to return to normal.

Q: Why was so much more square footage removed than originally stipulated?
A: Extra work happens because we have to remove as much as possible consistent with industry standards. By definition, some of that material will be clean material because the intent is to go “above and beyond” what is visible. This usually results in increased cost if it exceeds the original scope of work.

Q: Why can’t you do just a little bit more at no additional charge?
A: Because a company would go out of business giving away work above the original scope.

Q: What is Rebuild(Reconstruction)?
A: Replace lumber, insulation, drywall, painting, and finish work to render the space serviceable.

Q: What is Water Damage Restoration?
A: Restoration is usually less invasive than remediation because the water loss was caught soon enough to prevent mold infestation. The emphasis is more on drying out than “ripping” out. This will place more emphasis on drying machines instead of demolition manpower.

Q: Why are certifications more important than licensing to ensure a good job?
A: Licensing is handled by the State. Certifications are handled by industry organizations committed to excellence within its industry. The company you hire should have both to satisfy legal requirements and industry standards. Without certifications, you’re hiring a generalist who may not do the job correctly!

Q: Why a daily rate for reconstruction?
A: Because flat rates are hard to change once a couple of hours here and there get tacked on to finish the work faster. The corollary is evident in how the remediation scope expands necessitating a change order for extra work.

Q: Why is there a markup to materials?
A: Because of the busy work associated with acquiring the materials, such as shopping, transporting, etc.
